Start from the wall and work backwards
A datasheet is written to be read in the order the product was designed, which is rarely the order you need it. Read a zoom focus gobo projector sheet backwards: start from the image you want on the wall, then the distance, then the optics, then the light source. The headline wattage is the last thing to look at and the first thing most people compare.
Lumens, watts and what reaches the wall
Treat the lumen figure as a rough sorting tool and nothing more. It ignores the lens, the gobo transmission and the colour filter, any of which can take a third of the output. For a zoom focus gobo projector in the 30–200 W class, ask instead for measured image lux at a stated distance — a supplier who has that number has actually tested the unit.
The two numbers that must be quoted together
Check whether the quoted throw is to a white wall in a dark room, because that is where the number comes from. On a zoom focus gobo projector intended for a venue with a movable layout, the realistic working distance is usually shorter than the maximum on the sheet, since contrast — not reach — is what fails first.
The optical spec most sheets leave out
The spec most sheets omit is the maximum artwork resolution the optics can resolve. A zoom focus gobo projector with a good lens will render fine detail that a cheaper unit turns to mush, which means the limiting factor is often the projector, not the gobo. If your design has thin strokes, ask what line width the system holds at your throw distance.
The compliance block
Ratings age. A zoom focus gobo projector that left the factory rated IP65 can lose that rating the first time somebody opens it to change a gobo and reseats the gasket badly. Look for a design where routine access does not mean breaking the environmental seal, or accept that the rating applies to the unit as delivered, not as maintained.
Questions worth asking the supplier
Four questions separate a supplier who knows the product from one reading a sheet. What is the image width at my throw distance? What is the gobo image area? Is the IP65 rating for the housing alone or the whole assembly? And what is the lead time on a replacement gobo? A good supplier answers all four in one reply.
