Wedding Reception Gobo Light Problems: Diagnosis Before Replacement

Troubleshooting 2 min read

Before you raise a warranty claim on a wedding reception gobo light, spend an hour on site with this order of checks. Most faults resolve at step two.

Start at the wall and work back to the lamp

Work backwards from the wall. A wedding reception gobo light that looks wrong is usually telling you something specific: soft edges mean focus or angle, a dim image means ambient light or dirty optics, a colour cast means the filter or the gobo. Each symptom has three or four causes and only one of them is an expensive one.

  1. What the surface looks like and how it is lit
  2. Whether the image is uniformly soft or soft at one edge
  3. When the fault started — overnight or gradually
  4. Whether anything on site changed at the same time

Blur: focus, surface and lens

Blur has three causes and only one needs a new part. First, focus drift — housings expand as they warm and short throws are more sensitive than long ones. Second, an off-axis mount, where one side of the image is genuinely further away than the other and no focus setting fixes both. Third, a surface that is not flat, which scatters the image at the edges.

The image is too dim

Check the easy things in order: lens cleanliness, ambient light at the working hour, image size. Halving the image area doubles the brightness at the wall, which is free. Only after those should you consider a higher output model — and if you do, note that going from 20 W to 80 W is a visible but not dramatic change.

  1. Clean the outer window and lens
  2. Measure ambient light at the working hour
  3. Reduce the image width and re-check contrast
  4. Run a full duty cycle and log the housing temperature

Colour is wrong or the gobo looks damaged

Colour faults split into two groups. A global cast — everything is pinker or greener than it was — points at the colour filter or the LED itself. A fault confined to part of the image points at the gobo: a coating that has crazed, a glass gobo that has cracked, or contamination on one side. Knowing which you have saves replacing the wrong part.

  • Compare against the install photograph
  • Decide whether the whole image or part of it is affected
  • Inspect the gobo against a light at an angle
  • Check the original artwork file resolution

It cuts out, hums or trips

Check the supply before the fixture. A wedding reception gobo light on a long cable run, a shared circuit, or a supply with its protection sized for something else will misbehave in ways that look like product failure. Measure at the unit under load, not at the distribution board.

  • Note when the fault occurs — at switch-on or after warm-up
  • Measure the supply at the unit under load
  • Check the housing temperature and ventilation
  • Confirm the protective device is correctly sized

What to have ready before you call

Warranty claims go faster with evidence. Record the model, install date, daily run hours, throw distance and a photo of the fault. For a wedding reception gobo light the most useful single piece of information is whether the fault is gradual or sudden — gradual almost always means environment, sudden almost always means a component.

  • Model and serial number
  • Install date and daily run hours
  • Throw distance and image width
  • A photograph of the fault at the working hour

Common questions

Is a wedding reception gobo light suitable for outdoor use?

Yes, if it is specified for it. IP20 covers the housing against driving rain, but the bracket, the gland and the finish are what fail first on an exposed install. Ask what the rating covers before you assume it covers the assembly.

Can I project my own logo?

Any mark can be cut, but not every mark survives being cut. Vector files, reasonable stroke weights and a proof at the intended projection size will avoid the usual disappointment. Keep the original file — every reorder starts from it.

How often does it need cleaning?

Once or twice a year indoors, more often in a kitchen, workshop or roadside position. Set the interval from the environment and put it in the site calendar, because gradual output loss is easy to miss.
