Start at the wall and work back to the lamp
Work backwards from the wall. an indoor outdoor gobo projector that looks wrong is usually telling you something specific: soft edges mean focus or angle, a dim image means ambient light or dirty optics, a colour cast means the filter or the gobo. Each symptom has three or four causes and only one of them is an expensive one.
Blur: focus, surface and lens
Blur has three causes and only one needs a new part. First, focus drift — housings expand as they warm and short throws are more sensitive than long ones. Second, an off-axis mount, where one side of the image is genuinely further away than the other and no focus setting fixes both. Third, a surface that is not flat, which scatters the image at the edges.
- Refocus at the working hour on the actual surface

The image is too dim
Dimness is almost always an ambient light problem wearing a hardware disguise. Before changing the indoor outdoor gobo projector, measure what is already falling on the surface: if house lighting changed, a display moved, or the unit is now running an hour earlier, the projector has not got worse — the room has got brighter. The second most common cause is a dirty lens or a filter that has lost transmission.

Colour and artwork faults
If the whole image has shifted, suspect the filter; if only part has, suspect the gobo. Dichroic coatings are stable for years, but dyed glass browns under heat, and an indoor outdoor gobo projector running at the top of its range will age a cheap filter in a single season. Photograph the image against a white reference and compare it with the install photo.

It cuts out, hums or trips
Intermittent faults are thermal or connection problems. an indoor outdoor gobo projector that runs for an hour then cuts out is overheating or has a marginal supply; one that hums has a driver or a transformer under load; one that trips a breaker usually has a genuine earth fault or an over-sized protective device. Log when it happens — after warm-up, at switch-on, or at random — and the pattern identifies the cause.

- Check the housing temperature and ventilation
- Confirm the protective device is correctly sized
What to have ready before you call
Warranty claims go faster with evidence. Record the model, install date, daily run hours, throw distance and a photo of the fault. For an indoor outdoor gobo projector the most useful single piece of information is whether the fault is gradual or sudden — gradual almost always means environment, sudden almost always means a component.
