Wedding Gobo Projector Specifications: How to Read the Numbers

Specs explained 2 min read

Two wedding gobo projectors can carry identical headline figures and behave completely differently on site. The difference is in the numbers most sheets leave out, which is where this starts.

Start from the wall and work backwards

Most wedding gobo projector sheets list ten numbers and leave out the three that decide the result. Work from the wall backwards — image size, throw distance, ambient light — and treat everything else as supporting detail. The numbers that matter are the ones you can verify on site with a tape measure and a lux meter.

Lumens, watts and what reaches the wall

Three output figures get mixed up constantly: lumens describe what the lamp produces, lux describes what arrives on the surface, and watts describe what you pay for. A wedding gobo projector drawing 20–80 W might deliver 3,000 lumens, but the lux at the wall depends entirely on how wide you spread it. The same lamp projecting a 1 m image is nine times brighter than the same lamp projecting a 3 m image.

Throw distance and image size

Check whether the quoted throw is to a white wall in a dark room, because that is where the number comes from. On a wedding gobo projector intended for a dance floor, the realistic working distance is usually shorter than the maximum on the sheet, since contrast — not reach — is what fails first.

Gobo size, image area and resolution

The spec most sheets omit is the maximum artwork resolution the optics can resolve. A wedding gobo projector with a good lens will render fine detail that a cheaper unit turns to mush, which means the limiting factor is often the projector, not the gobo. If your design has thin strokes, ask what line width the system holds at your throw distance.

IP rating and electrical data

The electrical block is boring and expensive to get wrong. Confirm the input voltage range matches your supply, check whether the wedding gobo projector ships with a local plug, and look for CE, RoHS and FCC marks if the install is commercial. A unit that is electrically fine but uncertified will not pass a site inspection in most markets.

What a good supplier answers without hesitating

Ask for measured figures rather than calculated ones: image lux at a stated distance, image width at your throw, and the gobo image area. Then ask what happens when the unit needs servicing — whether the wedding gobo projector can be opened on site without voiding the rating, and how quickly artwork can be re-cut if a branch changes its logo.

Common questions

Do I need a professional to install it?

Indoors on an existing supply, no. Outdoors, at height, or where new cabling is needed, yes: the risk on those jobs is the supply and the access rather than the projector itself.

How often does it need cleaning?

Twice a year in a clean interior, quarterly anywhere with dust, grease or road exposure. Cleaning is the cheapest maintenance there is and the most often deferred — and deferred cleaning is what makes a wedding gobo projector look like it has failed.

How far can a wedding gobo projector throw?

Realistically 3 to 12 m for this class, with the image widening as the distance grows. The limiting factor is rarely reach — it is contrast, which fails well before the beam does. Ask for image width at your throw rather than a maximum distance.
