Read the sheet in the order it is installed
A datasheet is written to be read in the order the product was designed, which is rarely the order you need it. Read a self levelling laser line sheet backwards: start from the image you want on the wall, then the distance, then the optics, then the light source. The headline wattage is the last thing to look at and the first thing most people compare.
Output numbers, ranked by how much they lie
Treat the lumen figure as a rough sorting tool and nothing more. It ignores the lens, the gobo transmission and the colour filter, any of which can take a third of the output. For a self levelling laser line in the 15–60 W class, ask instead for measured image lux at a stated distance — a supplier who has that number has actually tested the unit.
Throw distance and image size
Check whether the quoted throw is to a white wall in a dark room, because that is where the number comes from. On a self levelling laser line intended for a tripod set-out, the realistic working distance is usually shorter than the maximum on the sheet, since contrast — not reach — is what fails first.
IP rating and electrical data
IP54 is the number to check for anything outdoors, but read what it covers. The first digit is solid ingress, the second is liquid. IP54 on a self levelling laser line means dust-tight and protected against water jets, and it says nothing about the bracket, the gland or the connector, which are the parts that actually fail. Ask whether the rating covers the whole assembly or just the housing.
Questions worth asking the supplier
Ask for measured figures rather than calculated ones: image lux at a stated distance, image width at your throw, and the gobo image area. Then ask what happens when the unit needs servicing — whether the self levelling laser line can be opened on site without voiding the rating, and how quickly artwork can be re-cut if a branch changes its logo.
