Outdoor Logo Projector Light Specifications: How to Read the Numbers

Specs explained 2 min read

The numbers on an outdoor logo projector light datasheet are all true and not all useful. Some describe the lamp, some describe the power bill, and one or two describe what you will actually see.

Start from the wall and work backwards

A datasheet is written to be read in the order the product was designed, which is rarely the order you need it. Read an outdoor logo projector light sheet backwards: start from the image you want on the wall, then the distance, then the optics, then the light source. The headline wattage is the last thing to look at and the first thing most people compare.

Lumens, watts and what reaches the wall

Treat the lumen figure as a rough sorting tool and nothing more. It ignores the lens, the gobo transmission and the colour filter, any of which can take a third of the output. For an outdoor logo projector light in the 50–250 W class, ask instead for measured image lux at a stated distance — a supplier who has that number has actually tested the unit.

FigureWhat it measuresHow much to trust it
LumensTotal light leaving the lampRough sorting tool — ignores lens and gobo losses
Lux at the wallLight arriving on the surfaceThe number that matters, rarely quoted
WattsPower drawn from the supplyTells you running cost, not brightness

The two numbers that must be quoted together

Throw distance without image width is meaningless, and plenty of sheets quote only one. an outdoor logo projector light that throws 35 m might give you a 1 m logo at that distance or a 6 m one, depending on the lens — a difference that decides whether the install works. Always ask for the pair: distance and the resulting image size.

ThrowTypical image widthPractical note
Short, around 6 m0.5 – 1.5 mBright and easy — most indoor work
Mid, around 35 m1.5 – 3 mWhere lens quality starts to matter
Long, beyond 35 m3 m and upContrast fails before reach does

Gobo size, image area and resolution

Gobo size is quoted as an outer diameter, but what matters is the image area — the part the light actually passes through. A 53 mm gobo may only have a 45 mm image circle, and artwork sized to the outer diameter gets cropped. For an outdoor logo projector light, ask for both figures before you commission artwork, because a file drawn for the wrong one is wasted.

IP rating and electrical data

IP67 is the number to check for anything outdoors, but read what it covers. The first digit is solid ingress, the second is liquid. IP67 on an outdoor logo projector light means dust-tight and protected against water jets, and it says nothing about the bracket, the gland or the connector, which are the parts that actually fail. Ask whether the rating covers the whole assembly or just the housing.

Questions worth asking the supplier

The most revealing question is about failure. Ask what the most common warranty claim on this outdoor logo projector light is and how it is resolved. A supplier who answers honestly is worth more than one with a slightly better spec sheet.

Common questions

Can I project my own logo?

Any mark can be cut, but not every mark survives being cut. Vector files, reasonable stroke weights and a proof at the intended projection size will avoid the usual disappointment. Keep the original file — every reorder starts from it.

Is an outdoor logo projector light suitable for outdoor use?

Only with the right rating. Look for IP67 on the housing and check that the cable gland is included in that rating, because the entry point is where water actually gets in. Exposure, salt air and access for servicing all matter as much as the number.

How long does the light source last?

LED sources in this class are rated in the tens of thousands of hours to L70, but that assumes reasonable cooling. an outdoor logo projector light running hot in an enclosed void will not reach the figure. Thermal design and cleaning access determine the real number more than the datasheet does.
