Outdoor Gobo Projector: Specs That Matter and Specs That Don't

Specs explained 2 min read

The numbers on an outdoor gobo projector datasheet are all true and not all useful. Some describe the lamp, some describe the power bill, and one or two describe what you will actually see.

Read the sheet in the order it is installed

Most outdoor gobo projector sheets list ten numbers and leave out the three that decide the result. Work from the wall backwards — image size, throw distance, ambient light — and treat everything else as supporting detail. The numbers that matter are the ones you can verify on site with a tape measure and a lux meter.

Output numbers, ranked by how much they lie

Wattage tells you the running cost, not the result. Two outdoor gobo projector models at the same wattage can differ by 30% at the wall because of lens efficiency and LED binning. What you actually care about is contrast: the image needs to be meaningfully brighter than the surface it lands on, and that is a lux comparison, not a lumen one.

FigureWhat it measuresHow much to trust it
LumensTotal light leaving the lampRough sorting tool — ignores lens and gobo losses
Lux at the wallLight arriving on the surfaceThe number that matters, rarely quoted
WattsPower drawn from the supplyTells you running cost, not brightness

Throw distance and image size

Throw distance without image width is meaningless, and plenty of sheets quote only one. an outdoor gobo projector that throws 40 m might give you a 1 m logo at that distance or a 6 m one, depending on the lens — a difference that decides whether the install works. Always ask for the pair: distance and the resulting image size.

ThrowTypical image widthPractical note
Short, around 8 m0.5 – 1.5 mBright and easy — most indoor work
Mid, around 40 m1.5 – 3 mWhere lens quality starts to matter
Long, beyond 40 m3 m and upContrast fails before reach does

The optical spec most sheets leave out

The spec most sheets omit is the maximum artwork resolution the optics can resolve. an outdoor gobo projector with a good lens will render fine detail that a cheaper unit turns to mush, which means the limiting factor is often the projector, not the gobo. If your design has thin strokes, ask what line width the system holds at your throw distance.

The compliance block

IP65 is the number to check for anything outdoors, but read what it covers. The first digit is solid ingress, the second is liquid. IP65 on an outdoor gobo projector means dust-tight and protected against water jets, and it says nothing about the bracket, the gland or the connector, which are the parts that actually fail. Ask whether the rating covers the whole assembly or just the housing.

What a good supplier answers without hesitating

The most revealing question is about failure. Ask what the most common warranty claim on this outdoor gobo projector is and how it is resolved. A supplier who answers honestly is worth more than one with a slightly better spec sheet.

Common questions

Do I need a professional to install it?

For a straightforward indoor position, a competent installer is enough. Anything outdoors, at height, or needing a new power run should go to an electrician — the electrical work and the access, not the optics, are what create risk on site.

Can I project my own logo?

Any mark can be cut, but not every mark survives being cut. Vector files, reasonable stroke weights and a proof at the intended projection size will avoid the usual disappointment. Keep the original file — every reorder starts from it.

Can the image be changed later?

Yes, and this is the main reason to choose an outdoor gobo projector over a fixed sign. Swapping a gobo takes minutes with a spare on hand. The lead time is in getting the new one cut, which is why keeping the original artwork file matters.
