Amlux borosilicate dichroic filters offered in Pantone colours up to 450°C — what it means for dichroic colour filter buyers

lens 1 min read

A recent move in the dichroic colour filter space changes a few assumptions buyers have carried for years. Below, the practical read — what matters for a real install, not the press release.

What's happening

Amlux's gobo dichroic filters are custom borosilicate (tempered) glass available in standard Pantone colours (e.g. Red Pantone 186 C, Blue 286 C, Green 355 C) with 1.1mm/0.5mm thickness and 14–180mm diameter. The dichroic process gives longer lifetime without colour loss and without absorbing light (no overheating), resisting high temperature up to 450°C.

Why it matters for buyers

For a retailer, venue or signage buyer, the practical effect is simple: the unit that reads on your wall at your ambient light, with your artwork, beats the one with the bigger number on the box. Specification order — distance, image size, ambient, then brightness — decides the result.

It also changes lead-time risk. Custom gobos and certified outdoor builds need briefing before the date is fixed; the projector is rarely the long pole, the artwork and certification are.

The technical angle

Colour filters cost output. Every added filter layer absorbs a slice of light; a three-colour stack can lose 40–60% of beam brightness. Quote the filtered lumen figure, not the bare lamp lumen, when comparing.

What to specify

Before you request a quote, lock these down:

  • Image size you need at that distance
  • Mounting surface and whether the bracket can hold aim
  • Lead time on a custom gobo versus a stock pattern
  • Ambient light level at the hour the projection must read

Common questions

Glass or metal gobo?

Glass for anything long-running or colour; metal for short, cheap runs. Glass resists the hot spot that burns coated steel within a season.

Why does my colour look washed out?

Usually a dyed-glass filter fading under heat, or too many filter layers eating output. Switch to dichroic and quote filtered lumens, not bare lamp lumens.
