Measure the throw before you read any spec
The first number to fix is the throw. A party gobo light rated for 2–10 m covers a very different wall at the near end than at the far end, and the image width roughly triples across that range on a typical zoom lens. Measure from the realistic mounting point — the one the site will actually let you use — and write it down before you look at any product page.
- Throw distance from the mounting point the site will allow
- Required image width at that distance
- Surface material and colour
- Whether the beam can be square to the surface
Match output to the ambient light
Output is not a property of the lamp, it is a relationship between the lamp and the room. An indoor corridor sitting at 300 lux will swallow a 30 W image completely, while the same unit reads clearly in a 50 lux courtyard at dusk. Before you size a party gobo light, find out how bright the target surface already is at the hour it will be used — that single measurement decides whether you need 15 W or 60 W.
- Ambient light on the surface at the hour of use
- Surface reflectance — matte white gives the most back
- Image width, since halving the area doubles the brightness
- Whether the unit has to compete with daylight
Lens, zoom and focus
Ask two questions about the lens: what is the throw ratio range, and can focus be locked. A party gobo light with a 3:1 zoom will cover 2 to 10 m from the same bracket, but only if the focus mechanism holds its setting once the housing is warm and the site has been vibrating for a month.
Gobo material: glass or metal
Your artwork decides the gobo material, not the other way round. A glass gobo handles fine strokes, gradients and photographic halftones that a metal stencil simply cannot hold, but it costs more and needs a little more care in handling. If the design is a solid single-colour mark with no fine detail, metal is cheaper and effectively unbreakable; if it has thin script or a gradient, glass is the only honest answer.
Ingress rating and mounting environment
The ingress rating is a statement about where the unit can live, not how good it is. IP20 on a party gobo light means it will cope with the conditions it was tested for — driving rain, dust, or in the case of indoor ratings, nothing more than a wipe-down. If the install is under a soffit that only sees wind-blown rain, an indoor-rated unit may be fine; if it is exposed on a nightclub, IP20 is the floor, not the target.

- Whether the cable gland is rated with the housing
- UV exposure on painted finishes and plastic parts
- Salt or pollutant load in the air

The fastest quotes come from the most specific enquiries. Include the mounting height, the distance to the target surface, whether it is indoor or exposed, and the artwork in vector if you have it. A party gobo light specification built from those details can be quoted and shipped without a second round of clarification.
