What a High Power Gobo Projector Actually Costs

Cost & pricing 2 min read

Quotes for a high power gobo projector look similar because they are quoting the same thing: the fixture. The differences show up in the lines nobody asked about.

Why the unit price misleads

Buyers compare the hardware price and then discover the artwork, the mounting hardware and the access costs. A high power gobo projector is a system: light source, optics, a piece of custom glass, a bracket and somebody's time on a ladder. Quoting only the first of those produces budgets that do not survive the first year.

What you pay for the fixture

Price follows the thermal and environmental specification more than the marketing category. A high power gobo projector built for a large advertising wall will cost more than one for an architectural facade for reasons that are entirely justified — better seals, better heatsinking, better finish. The saving is real only if you never needed them.

Custom artwork and gobos

Custom artwork is the recurring line, and the one that gets forgotten. Every rebrand, every new branch, every seasonal change means another gobo; if you are running a high power gobo projector across several sites, that is a standing cost, not an one-off. Standardise the gobo size across the estate and reorders become cheap and quick.

  • Engraving per unit, and any minimum quantity
  • Artwork preparation if the supplied file needs work
  • Shipping, especially on small reorders
  • Lead time, and the cost of waiting

The line that surprises people

Price the site, not the fixture. Two identical high power gobo projector installs can differ by a factor of three depending on access, power availability and whether work has to happen outside trading hours. Get that number before the order, not after.

  • Access equipment — ladder, scaffold or powered platform
  • Power run and any making good afterwards
  • Out-of-hours or trading-hours working
  • Fixings, bracket and cable management

Total cost of ownership

Total cost is dominated by whatever you have to do most often. If the high power gobo projector is easy to reach, cleaning is trivial and cheap; if it needs scaffolding, it gets deferred, output declines, and eventually somebody replaces a unit that only needed a wipe. Design for access and the running cost halves.

  1. Hardware, once
  2. Artwork reorders, every rebrand or new site
  3. Cleaning, twice a year
  4. Power, continuously

Where to save and where not to

Spend on the survey and the artwork, save on the headline wattage. A correctly sized high power gobo projector, aimed at a well-chosen surface, beats an over-specified one pointed at the wrong wall — and costs less to buy and to run.

Common questions

Do I need a professional to install it?

Indoors on an existing supply, no. Outdoors, at height, or where new cabling is needed, yes: the risk on those jobs is the supply and the access rather than the projector itself.

Can I project my own logo?

Yes — that is the point of a high power gobo projector. Supply vector artwork if you have it, and check the thinnest stroke in the design, because that is what determines whether a glass gobo is required. Most artwork problems show up as lost detail rather than a failed unit.

How often does it need cleaning?

Once or twice a year indoors, more often in a kitchen, workshop or roadside position. Set the interval from the environment and put it in the site calendar, because gradual output loss is easy to miss.
