Diagnose in the order light travels
Diagnose in the order the light travels: surface, then focus, then gobo, then lamp, then power. That sequence finds most gobo projection light faults in under an hour, and it prevents the common mistake of replacing a perfectly good unit because the wall turned out to be the problem. Start by asking what changed โ a fault that appeared overnight has a different cause from one that crept in over a season.
- What the surface looks like and how it is lit
- Whether the image is uniformly soft or soft at one edge
- When the fault started โ overnight or gradually
- Whether anything on site changed at the same time
The image is soft or out of focus
Refocus at the working hour, on the actual surface, and check the corners as well as the centre. If the corners never sharpen, the gobo projection light is off-axis rather than out of focus โ move the bracket rather than the lens. If focus drifts again after a week, look for vibration or a focus mechanism without a lock.

Dim: ambient light, output and dirty optics
Check the easy things in order: lens cleanliness, ambient light at the working hour, image size. Halving the image area doubles the brightness at the wall, which is free. Only after those should you consider a higher output model โ and if you do, note that going from 25 W to 250 W is a visible but not dramatic change.

Colour and artwork faults
Most colour complaints turn out to be artwork, not hardware. A gobo engraved from a low-resolution file, or one where a gradient was converted to a coarse halftone, produces banding and muddy edges that look like a projector fault. Check the original file before ordering replacement optics.

It cuts out, hums or trips
Intermittent faults are thermal or connection problems. A gobo projection light that runs for an hour then cuts out is overheating or has a marginal supply; one that hums has a driver or a transformer under load; one that trips a breaker usually has a genuine earth fault or an over-sized protective device. Log when it happens โ after warm-up, at switch-on, or at random โ and the pattern identifies the cause.
When to stop and call the manufacturer
Warranty claims go faster with evidence. Record the model, install date, daily run hours, throw distance and a photo of the fault. For a gobo projection light the most useful single piece of information is whether the fault is gradual or sudden โ gradual almost always means environment, sudden almost always means a component.
