Wedding Light vs the Alternative: How to Decide

Comparisons 2 min read

Choosing between a wedding light and the next option up is easier once you stop comparing specifications and start comparing jobs.

Set the comparison on the same wall

Compare at the same distance, on the same surface, at the same hour. Every meaningful difference between a wedding light and the alternative shows up there and nowhere else — on a spec sheet both options look capable. Set up the comparison on the wall you actually have, and the decision usually makes itself.

Where the brightness comes from

The light source sets the ceiling on everything else. LED gives instant strike, long life and low heat, which is why it has largely replaced discharge lamps in this class; discharge sources still win on raw output per dollar for very large, long-throw installs. For a wedding light in the 20–80 W band, LED is the default and the comparison is about driver quality and thermal design, not the source.

  1. Instant strike and tolerance of frequent switching
  2. Output stability over the duty cycle
  3. Driver quality and thermal design
  4. Measured output at the wall, not rated lumens

Image quality and artwork freedom

Image freedom is where the options separate most sharply. A gobo-based wedding light can put any vector mark, script or halftone image on the wall; a beam-based alternative can only draw lines and abstract patterns. If the job is a logo, a monogram or anything with text, the comparison ends here.

  • Can it render text and fine strokes
  • Does it hold gradients or photographic halftones
  • Gobo or pattern changeover time
  • Maximum artwork resolution the optics can resolve

Running cost, heat and service life

Service life is a design outcome, not a datasheet number. Compare how each option handles heat, whether routine servicing breaks the environmental seal, and how quickly a replacement gobo can be produced. Those three things determine whether the unit is still doing its job in year three.

  1. Rated hours and what end of life means
  2. Cleaning frequency and access method
  3. Gobo or pattern replacement cost and lead time
  4. Power draw at the actual duty cycle

The short version

Set the two options side by side on the criteria that survive contact with a real site: what they can draw, what they cost to run, what they need to stay bright, and how they are serviced. The table is deliberately short — if a criterion does not change the decision, it does not belong in it.

Decide on the job, not the datasheet

If you are still unsure, buy one of each and put them on the wall for a week. Differences that look marginal in a table are unmistakable on site, and one wedding light is a small price to pay for getting a rollout right.

  • Does the job need text, a logo or fine detail
  • Is the surface and ambient light controlled
  • How often will the artwork change
  • How will it be serviced in year three

Common questions

Can the image be changed later?

Yes, and this is the main reason to choose a wedding light over a fixed sign. Swapping a gobo takes minutes with a spare on hand. The lead time is in getting the new one cut, which is why keeping the original artwork file matters.

Can I project my own logo?

Any mark can be cut, but not every mark survives being cut. Vector files, reasonable stroke weights and a proof at the intended projection size will avoid the usual disappointment. Keep the original file — every reorder starts from it.

What size gobo do I need?

Match it to the holder, and note that image area and outer diameter are different numbers. Standardising on one size across your sites makes every later reorder quick and cheap.
