Waterproof Gobo Projector Compared: What You Gain and What You Give Up

Comparisons 2 min read

Comparisons between a waterproof gobo projector and the alternative tend to be made on price and settled on capability. The two rarely agree.

Set the comparison on the same wall

Set the terms before comparing. For a waterproof gobo projector, that means fixing the throw distance, the image size, the ambient light and the artwork — then asking which option meets all four. Any comparison that holds one of those variables loose will produce the wrong answer.

Light source and output

Where the brightness comes from determines what you can do with it. An LED waterproof gobo projector can be switched, dimmed and cycled without penalty; older sources need warm-up and suffer from frequent switching. For anything on a timer or a sensor, LED is not just more efficient — it is the only sensible choice.

What each option can actually draw

Detail is the constraint that decides most comparisons. A waterproof gobo projector carrying a custom gobo will reproduce a script monogram cleanly; alternatives that generate the image electronically or mechanically cannot. Check the thinnest stroke in your artwork against what each system holds before you weigh anything else.

  • Can it render text and fine strokes
  • Does it hold gradients or photographic halftones
  • Gobo or pattern changeover time
  • Maximum artwork resolution the optics can resolve

Running cost, heat and service life

Count the recurring costs: artwork re-cuts, filter replacement, cleaning access, and power. A waterproof gobo projector that needs a cherry picker to service costs more over three years than a slightly more expensive unit that can be reached with a ladder. Access is a running cost and it is almost never in the quote.

Side by side

Set the two options side by side on the criteria that survive contact with a real site: what they can draw, what they cost to run, what they need to stay bright, and how they are serviced. The table is deliberately short — if a criterion does not change the decision, it does not belong in it.

How to choose

The decision is usually obvious once the artwork is fixed. Text and brand marks need the waterproof gobo projector; washes and abstract movement do not. Where it stays genuinely close, buy the one that can be serviced from a ladder — that will be the difference you remember in year three.

Common questions

Can I project my own logo?

Yes — that is the point of a waterproof gobo projector. Supply vector artwork if you have it, and check the thinnest stroke in the design, because that is what determines whether a glass gobo is required. Most artwork problems show up as lost detail rather than a failed unit.

How long does the light source last?

The rating is usually 30,000–50,000 hours to L70. Whether you get it depends on heat: a well-ventilated waterproof gobo projector will, one sealed into a ceiling void will not. Check the housing temperature after an hour at full output.

What size gobo do I need?

The gobo has to match the holder in your specific waterproof gobo projector, and the image area is smaller than the outer diameter — a 53 mm gobo may only expose 45 mm. Ask for both figures and draw the artwork to the image area, not the outside dimension.
