Water Ripple Projector Buying Guide

Buying guides 1 min read

The water ripple effect is one of the few projection effects that reads instantly from across a room. But the same unit that looks like a lake on a white wall can look like a faulty fluorescent over a busy surface — so the buying decision is mostly about where it will run.

What the effect actually is

A water ripple projector shines a rotating glass gobo or a laser diffraction pattern through a lens so the light lands as slow-moving waves. The motion comes from a motorised disc or a scanning laser, not from video. That is why the effect is cheap to run and never buffers, but also why it cannot show text.

Indoor or outdoor first

Decide the primary location before the spec sheet. Indoors you can use a lower IP rating and less power because ambient light is controlled. Outdoors you need weatherproofing and enough output to survive streetlight and nearby signage.

  • Indoor: lobby, ceiling, feature wall, behind a reception desk
  • Outdoor: garden wall, pool edge, building facade, covered patio
  • Dual-use: pick the outdoor rating — an indoor unit will fog up the first damp week

IP rating and water safety

The rating governs how the unit behaves near moisture, not just rain.

RatingMeaningTypical use
IP44Splash resistantIndoor damp rooms only
IP65Rain and dust tightCovered outdoor / patio
IP67Brief immersionPoolside, open weather

Brightness for the surface

Brightness decides contrast, and contrast decides whether anyone sees the waves. A 20W unit is enough for a dim interior wall; a poolside or facade install usually needs 50W-plus to read against ambient light. Increase image size and you pay in brightness, so fix the size before the wattage.

Control options

Most units ship with a remote and a timer. For installs that change mood through the evening, look for a model with DMX or an app so the speed and colour can be matched to the moment.

  • Remote: fine for a fixed mood
  • Timer: auto on at dusk, off at dawn
  • DMX / app: sync speed and colour to the venue

Where it earns its keep

The effect is strongest where a still surface looks empty — a plain lobby ceiling, a garden wall, a pool that already catches light. It is weakest over textured or reflective surfaces where the waves compete with what is already there.

  1. Map the exact wall or water surface
  2. Test one unit at the real hour before buying many
  3. Keep a spare gobo disc for colour changes

Common questions

Can a water ripple projector run in a swimming pool?

Not submerged. The projector stays dry on the edge or ceiling; only the light hits the water. For poolside use choose at least IP65, and route the cable away from the water line.

How bright should it be for an outdoor wall?

Plan for 50W or more if the wall faces streetlight or a lit sign. A dim interior may only need 15-20W. Measure the light already on the surface before ordering.

Does it show video or text?

No. The ripple is a mechanical or laser effect, not a media player. If you need a logo or message, use a gobo logo projector instead.

Can I change the colour?

Many units take a colour filter disc or offer RGB. Single-colour models are cheaper but lock you into one mood.

Will it work on a textured stone wall?

Poorly. Texture scatters the waves and kills the effect. Use a matte, light, flat surface square to the beam.

How long do the LEDs last?

Typically 30,000-50,000 hours to L70, assuming the housing stays ventilated. Sealing a unit into a ceiling void shortens that sharply.
