The failure mode nobody catches
A static gobo projector does not fail, it fades. Output declines slowly through dust, film on the optics and gradual LED wear, and because the change is gradual nobody dates it. By the time somebody complains the unit has often lost a third of its output — most of it recoverable with a cloth.
- Take a reference photo at install, under the conditions it will run in
- Repeat it annually, same hour, same house lighting
- Log any cleaning or gobo change with a date
- Compare before assuming the unit has failed
Cleaning the optics
Frequency depends on the site, not the product. A static gobo projector in a clean lobby needs attention once a year; one in a kitchen, a workshop or beside a road needs it quarterly. Set the interval from the environment and write it into the site calendar.
- Blow or brush off loose dust first
- Use isopropyl sparingly on a proper lens cloth
- Avoid household cleaners on any coated surface
- Handle the gobo by the edge, never the face
Gobo inspection and replacement
Inspect the gobo whenever the image quality changes. Look for crazing in the coating, cracks at the edge, or a mark that appears in the projected image but is hard to see on the glass — holding it up to a light at an angle reveals most faults. Replace rather than clean a coated gobo that has started to degrade.

The half-yearly inspection
The half-yearly inspection is short: feel the housing after an hour, look at the seals, check the gland, and confirm the bracket has not moved. Thermal problems and water ingress cause most of the premature failures in this class, and both are visible without any test equipment.

Before the busy period
Seasonal checks are about duty cycle, not optics. Run it for the length of the event, at the hour it will run, and confirm it does not cut out. Clean the optics at the same time and you will start the season at full output.

Spares worth holding
Hold three things: a spare gobo, a spare remote or control interface, and the contact for re-cutting artwork. Everything else on a static gobo projector is either long-lived or a job for the supplier. Those three cover the failures that actually happen and cost very little to keep on the shelf.
