When Your Restaurant Logo Projector Looks Wrong on the Wall

Troubleshooting 2 min read

Before you raise a warranty claim on a restaurant logo projector, spend an hour on site with this order of checks. Most faults resolve at step two.

Diagnose in the order light travels

Work backwards from the wall. A restaurant logo projector that looks wrong is usually telling you something specific: soft edges mean focus or angle, a dim image means ambient light or dirty optics, a colour cast means the filter or the gobo. Each symptom has three or four causes and only one of them is an expensive one.

Blur: focus, surface and lens

Refocus at the working hour, on the actual surface, and check the corners as well as the centre. If the corners never sharpen, the restaurant logo projector is off-axis rather than out of focus — move the bracket rather than the lens. If focus drifts again after a week, look for vibration or a focus mechanism without a lock.

Dim: ambient light, output and dirty optics

Dimness is almost always an ambient light problem wearing a hardware disguise. Before changing the restaurant logo projector, measure what is already falling on the surface: if house lighting changed, a display moved, or the unit is now running an hour earlier, the projector has not got worse — the room has got brighter. The second most common cause is a dirty lens or a filter that has lost transmission.

  1. Clean the outer window and lens
  2. Measure ambient light at the working hour
  3. Reduce the image width and re-check contrast
  4. Run a full duty cycle and log the housing temperature

Colour and artwork faults

If the whole image has shifted, suspect the filter; if only part has, suspect the gobo. Dichroic coatings are stable for years, but dyed glass browns under heat, and a restaurant logo projector running at the top of its range will age a cheap filter in a single season. Photograph the image against a white reference and compare it with the install photo.

  • Compare against the install photograph
  • Decide whether the whole image or part of it is affected
  • Inspect the gobo against a light at an angle
  • Check the original artwork file resolution

It cuts out, hums or trips

Intermittent faults are thermal or connection problems. A restaurant logo projector that runs for an hour then cuts out is overheating or has a marginal supply; one that hums has a driver or a transformer under load; one that trips a breaker usually has a genuine earth fault or an over-sized protective device. Log when it happens — after warm-up, at switch-on, or at random — and the pattern identifies the cause.

  • Note when the fault occurs — at switch-on or after warm-up
  • Measure the supply at the unit under load
  • Check the housing temperature and ventilation
  • Confirm the protective device is correctly sized

What to have ready before you call

Call the manufacturer when the fault survives the sequence: optics cleaned, focus reset at the working hour, ambient light measured, and supply checked under load. Have the model, the install date, the throw distance and a photo of the image ready — that is enough for a supplier to tell you whether it is a warranty matter or a site issue.

Common questions

How far can a restaurant logo projector throw?

Expect usable work between 2 and 10 m. What matters is the image width at that distance: the same unit can give a 1 m or a 3 m image depending on the lens, and the smaller one is always the brighter.

How long does the light source last?

LED sources in this class are rated in the tens of thousands of hours to L70, but that assumes reasonable cooling. A restaurant logo projector running hot in an enclosed void will not reach the figure. Thermal design and cleaning access determine the real number more than the datasheet does.

What size gobo do I need?

The gobo has to match the holder in your specific restaurant logo projector, and the image area is smaller than the outer diameter — a 53 mm gobo may only expose 45 mm. Ask for both figures and draw the artwork to the image area, not the outside dimension.
