Preparing Artwork for Gobo Engraving: File Rules That Save a Week

Gobo engraving 2 min read

Installation is where a good artwork preparation for gobo becomes a good result, or does not. Everything below is ordered the way the job should actually be done.

What to check on the first visit

an artwork preparation for gobo install is mostly survey work. Walk the site at the hour the projection will run, because the ambient light, the position of vehicles, and even the position of a display stand all change what works. Take a photo, measure the throw, and mark the cable route before ordering anything.

  • Power within reach of the mounting point
  • What the target surface is made of and how it is lit
  • Whether the mounting point carries the weight
  • Access for future servicing — ladder or powered platform

Mounting height and bracket choice

Choose the bracket before the fixture. an artwork preparation for gobo needs to hold its aim through thermal cycles and, outdoors, through wind loading; a lightweight bracket that drifts a degree will put the image off-target within a month. Use a bracket rated above the fixture weight, and if the install is exposed, check the fixings are stainless.

Power, cable routing and switching

Power is where commercial installs fail inspection. an artwork preparation for gobo drawing 20–200 W is not a problem in itself, but a cable run across a public area, a domestic extension lead, or an unswitched spur all are. Plan a fixed supply, use a gland rated to the environment, and route the cable so it is neither a trip hazard nor the first thing a cleaner unplugs.

Commissioning checks

Test the way it will be used, not the way it was installed. Run the artwork preparation for gobo at the hour it is meant to run, with the house lights at their normal setting, and look at the image from where the audience will stand. A unit that looks fine at 2pm in an empty room can be invisible at 7pm with the lights on.

  • Image sharpness at the centre and all four corners
  • Contrast against the surface at the working hour
  • Full duty cycle run without thermal cut-out
  • Housing temperature after an hour at full output

Handover notes worth leaving behind

Leave four things behind: the throw distance and image width as installed, the gobo reference, the focus and zoom settings, and the supplier's contact for re-cutting artwork. Six months later, when somebody asks for a second unit to match, that sheet of paper is worth more than the manual.

  • Installed throw distance and image size
  • Gobo size and reference code
  • Lens settings
  • Reorder contact and lead time

Common questions

What size gobo do I need?

Match it to the holder, and note that image area and outer diameter are different numbers. Standardising on one size across your sites makes every later reorder quick and cheap.

Is an artwork preparation for gobo suitable for outdoor use?

Only with the right rating. Look for IP65 on the housing and check that the cable gland is included in that rating, because the entry point is where water actually gets in. Exposure, salt air and access for servicing all matter as much as the number.

What surface works best?

Matte and light-coloured, square to the beam. Glossy surfaces reflect the light away from the viewer and dark ones absorb it; both cost you contrast that no amount of extra wattage recovers cheaply. If the surface is fixed, reduce the image size instead.
