Choosing between a party gobo light and the next option up is easier once you stop comparing specifications and start comparing jobs.

Set the comparison on the same wall

The comparison that matters is not the one on the datasheet. Two options with similar wattage can differ entirely in what they can draw, how long they last, and what they cost to keep running. Put them side by side on the real surface and rank them on the things you will live with, not the things that look good in a table.

Where the brightness comes from

Compare output at the wall, not at the lamp. LED efficiency varies widely between bins and drivers, so a party gobo light quoting fewer lumens can deliver more lux through a better lens. If the supplier cannot give you a measured figure at a stated distance, treat the comparison as unreliable.

Image quality and artwork freedom

Detail is the constraint that decides most comparisons. Check the thinnest stroke in your artwork against what each system holds before you weigh anything else.

The bill after the first year

The purchase price is the first payment, not the last. LEDs in this class are rated in the tens of thousands of hours to L70, but that figure assumes reasonable thermal management — a party gobo light cooking in an enclosed void will not reach it. Add gobo replacement, cleaning access, and the cost of the electricity, and the ranking often changes.

Decide on the job, not the datasheet

Choose on the job, not the datasheet. If the work is a logo, a monogram or anything with readable text, a party gobo light with a proper gobo is the answer. If it is an abstract effect over a large area, the alternative may be cheaper and better. The mistake is buying the flexible option for a job that does not need it, or the cheap one for a job that does.

Common questions

How much power does a party gobo light need?

Start from the ambient light. A dim interior needs very little; a private party room at the working hour may need the top of the 15–60 W range. Increasing image size costs more output than most buyers expect, so fix the size first, then the power.

What size gobo do I need?

The gobo has to match the holder in your specific party gobo light, and the image area is smaller than the outer diameter — a 53 mm gobo may only expose 45 mm. Ask for both figures and draw the artwork to the image area, not the outside dimension.

What surface works best?

A matte, light-coloured, flat surface square to the beam. Textured or glossy walls scatter the image and patterned ones compete with it. Where the surface cannot be changed, a smaller image is the effective fix.
