IP65 sounds like a finish line, but it is the easiest box to tick and the least of what keeps an outdoor projector alive. The failures that generate callouts are almost always the bracket, the cable entry and the cold — not the housing number.

Start with the wall, not the wattage

Outdoor projection lives or dies on the surface. A matte, light-coloured facade square to the beam reads at half the power of a glossy, dark one. Survey the exact wall and its ambient light at the hour you care about before sizing the unit.

What IP65 actually protects

IP65 means dust-tight and protected against water jets. It covers the body, not necessarily the cable gland or the bracket. Those are where water actually gets in, so check they share the rating.

Mounting and aim

Pick a bracket that holds the aim angle without drifting as the housing warms. Vibration from traffic or wind will walk a loose mount out of focus within a week.

Outdoor runs need a weatherproof connection and a route that does not cross a public pavement or a downpipe. Plan the cable before you drill.

Winter behaviour

Cold is the real test. Condensation forms behind the lens on the first cold night if the breather is blocked, and a sealed void traps heat that cook the LED in summer. A unit that breathes correctly outlasts a tougher-looking sealed one.

A 24/7 duty check

If the logo runs all night, confirm the duty cycle and the thermal design. A unit rated for occasional use will dim within a season on a 24/7 schedule.

Is IP65 enough for rain?

Yes for rain and dust. It is not for immersion or direct spray from a jet wash — that is IP67 territory.

Why does my projector fog up in winter?

A blocked breather vent traps moisture and temperature swings condense it on the cold lens. Keep the vent clear and avoid sealing the housing fully.

Can I aim it across a public pavement?

Only if the cable is routed clear of the walking surface and the bracket is out of reach. Otherwise use a higher, wall-mounted position.

How do I stop it drifting out of focus?

Torque the bracket after the first warm-up, when thermal expansion has settled, and re-check the aim a week later.

What wattage for a building facade?

Often 100W-plus at distance and against streetlight. Measure the wall and the throw before choosing; image size costs more output than buyers expect.

Should it run 24/7?

Only if the thermal design is rated for continuous duty. Otherwise run it on a timer from dusk to a set hour.
