Apollo Gobos launches CLP1 collimated lighting projector — what it means for gobo projector buyers

dynamic 1 min read

A recent move in the gobo projector space changes a few assumptions buyers have carried for years. Below, the practical read — what matters for a real install, not the press release.

What's happening

Apollo Gobos introduced the CLP1, a collimated lighting projector built to throw gobos at off-axis and curved angles while holding focus across planes. It outputs over 1000 lumens, uses DMX dimming with daisy-chain connectivity for larger installs, and is engineered in a rugged purpose-built enclosure; Apollo states it is designed and manufactured in the USA.

Why it matters for buyers

For a retailer, venue or signage buyer, the practical effect is simple: the unit that reads on your wall at your ambient light, with your artwork, beats the one with the bigger number on the box. Specification order — distance, image size, ambient, then brightness — decides the result.

It also changes lead-time risk. Custom gobos and certified outdoor builds need briefing before the date is fixed; the projector is rarely the long pole, the artwork and certification are.

The technical angle

Pattern rotation and switching are firmware features, not brightness features. They let one fixture cover a window, a doorway and a floor sequentially — useful for venues, irrelevant for a fixed logo that should sit still.

What to specify

Before you request a quote, lock these down:

  • Mounting surface and whether the bracket can hold aim
  • Throw distance from bracket to surface, measured on site — not estimated
  • Image size you need at that distance
  • Lead time on a custom gobo versus a stock pattern

Common questions

Do I need zoom-focus?

Only if the throw distance changes between installs. A fixed dedicated lens stays marginally sharper; zoom saves a re-lens when distances vary.

How long do patterns last?

Glass patterns run for years; rotating patterns are firmware-driven and need no consumable. The wear item is the gobo, not the mechanism.
