Rosco custom one-colour glass gobos use in-house dichroic glass for CMYK control — what it means for gobo lens buyers

lens 1 min read

A recent move in the gobo lens space changes a few assumptions buyers have carried for years. Below, the practical read — what matters for a real install, not the press release.

What's happening

Stage Depot's custom one-colour glass gobo (manufactured by Rosco) is produced with Rosco's own dichroic glass, giving colour consistency gobo to gobo and full CMYK palette manipulation for metallic and pastel effects competitors cannot match. Rosco's wet-etching process yields vertical cuts with less 'feathering', and the glass is Borofloat 1.1mm, sized 8mm-110mm, with stochastic screening and specialised coatings for extra-fine lines and gradients. Lead time is about 6 days.

Why it matters for buyers

For a retailer, venue or signage buyer, the practical effect is simple: the unit that reads on your wall at your ambient light, with your artwork, beats the one with the bigger number on the box. Specification order — distance, image size, ambient, then brightness — decides the result.

It also changes lead-time risk. Custom gobos and certified outdoor builds need briefing before the date is fixed; the projector is rarely the long pole, the artwork and certification are.

The technical angle

Resolution of the projected image is set by the gobo, not the projector. A crisp 10,000 dpi etched glass gobo on a modest lamp still beats a soft pattern on an expensive one. Match the artwork to the glass, not the other way round.

What to specify

Before you request a quote, lock these down:

  • Mounting surface and whether the bracket can hold aim
  • Image size you need at that distance
  • Ingress rating if it lives outdoors or gets washed down
  • Lead time on a custom gobo versus a stock pattern

Common questions

Why does my colour look washed out?

Usually a dyed-glass filter fading under heat, or too many filter layers eating output. Switch to dichroic and quote filtered lumens, not bare lamp lumens.

Glass or metal gobo?

Glass for anything long-running or colour; metal for short, cheap runs. Glass resists the hot spot that burns coated steel within a season.
