Lensbaby ships a dichroic colour expansion pack for its Omni filter system — what it means for dichroic colour filter buyers

lens 1 min read

A recent move in the dichroic colour filter space changes a few assumptions buyers have carried for years. Below, the practical read — what matters for a real install, not the press release.

What's happening

Lensbaby released four dichroic interference filters — cyan, magenta, yellow and gold — for the Omni 2.0 mount, measuring 98.7% average transmission across their passbands with sub-0.5-degree angular tolerance. Each disc uses 47 alternating TiO2 and SiO2 layers on 1.5 mm Schott B270 glass, applied by vacuum deposition in a Class 100 cleanroom. Testing showed thermal drift of -0.12 nm/degreeC for the cyan filter and no measurable birefringence at 546.1 nm.

Why it matters for buyers

For a retailer, venue or signage buyer, the practical effect is simple: the unit that reads on your wall at your ambient light, with your artwork, beats the one with the bigger number on the box. Specification order — distance, image size, ambient, then brightness — decides the result.

It also changes lead-time risk. Custom gobos and certified outdoor builds need briefing before the date is fixed; the projector is rarely the long pole, the artwork and certification are.

The technical angle

Resolution of the projected image is set by the gobo, not the projector. A crisp 10,000 dpi etched glass gobo on a modest lamp still beats a soft pattern on an expensive one. Match the artwork to the glass, not the other way round.

What to specify

Before you request a quote, lock these down:

  • Ambient light level at the hour the projection must read
  • Ingress rating if it lives outdoors or gets washed down
  • Certifications required for the market (CE / RoHS / FCC)
  • Throw distance from bracket to surface, measured on site — not estimated

Common questions

Glass or metal gobo?

Glass for anything long-running or colour; metal for short, cheap runs. Glass resists the hot spot that burns coated steel within a season.

Why does my colour look washed out?

Usually a dyed-glass filter fading under heat, or too many filter layers eating output. Switch to dichroic and quote filtered lumens, not bare lamp lumens.
