Keeping a Long Throw Gobo Projector Bright Year After Year

A long throw gobo projector rarely stops working. It declines slowly, which is why the decline goes unrecorded until somebody finally complains.

Why output fades quietly

A long throw gobo projector does not fail, it fades. Output declines slowly through dust, film on the optics and gradual LED wear, and because the change is gradual nobody dates it. By the time somebody complains the unit has often lost a third of its output — most of it recoverable with a cloth.

  • Take a reference photo at install, under the conditions it will run in
  • Repeat it annually, same hour, same house lighting
  • Log any cleaning or gobo change with a date
  • Compare before assuming the unit has failed

Cleaning the optics

Clean in the order the light travels: outer window, then the lens, then the gobo. Use a blower or a soft brush before any liquid, and only then a lens cloth with a drop of isopropyl — never a household cleaner, which will damage coatings in one go. Handle the gobo by its edge; fingerprints bake into the coating under a hot lamp.

Gobo inspection and replacement

The gobo is the part that carries the image and the part most often blamed for a fault that is elsewhere. Check it against a light before assuming the optics have failed: a hairline crack or a patch of degraded coating shows up clearly when you tilt it. Keep the reference code so reorders are exact.

  • Look for marks that show in the image but not on the glass
  • Replace rather than clean a degraded coated gobo

Heat, seals and electrical checks

The half-yearly inspection is short: feel the housing after an hour, look at the seals, check the gland, and confirm the bracket has not moved. Thermal problems and water ingress cause most of the premature failures in this class, and both are visible without any test equipment.

  • Housing temperature after an hour at full output
  • Seals and gaskets still seated and supple
  • Bracket tight and the unit still on aim
  • Cable gland intact and the drip loop in place

Seasonal and event checks

Do the full-duty test before you need it. A long throw gobo projector that has sat idle through the quiet months should be run for a complete cycle at the working hour, with the house lights as they will be, before the season starts. That one test catches most of what would otherwise become a mid-event failure.

Spares worth holding

Hold three things: a spare gobo, a spare remote or control interface, and the contact for re-cutting artwork. Everything else on a long throw gobo projector is either long-lived or a job for the supplier. Those three cover the failures that actually happen and cost very little to keep on the shelf.

Common questions

What size gobo do I need?

The gobo has to match the holder in your specific long throw gobo projector, and the image area is smaller than the outer diameter — a 53 mm gobo may only expose 45 mm. Ask for both figures and draw the artwork to the image area, not the outside dimension.

What surface works best?

A matte, light-coloured, flat surface square to the beam. Textured or glossy walls scatter the image and patterned ones compete with it. Where the surface cannot be changed, a smaller image is the effective fix.

How far can a long throw gobo projector throw?

Expect usable work between 20 and 80 m. What matters is the image width at that distance: the same unit can give a 1 m or a 3 m image depending on the lens, and the smaller one is always the brighter.
