IP65 Gobo Light Projector Compared: What You Gain and What You Give Up

Comparisons 2 min read

Choosing between an IP65 gobo light projector and the next option up is easier once you stop comparing specifications and start comparing jobs.

Set the comparison on the same wall

Compare at the same distance, on the same surface, at the same hour. Every meaningful difference between an IP65 gobo light projector and the alternative shows up there and nowhere else — on a spec sheet both options look capable. Set up the comparison on the wall you actually have, and the decision usually makes itself.

  • Throw distance and image size, fixed for both options
  • The surface and the ambient light at the working hour
  • The artwork, and whether it contains text or fine detail
  • How each option will be serviced

Light source and output

The light source sets the ceiling on everything else. LED gives instant strike, long life and low heat, which is why it has largely replaced discharge lamps in this class; discharge sources still win on raw output per dollar for very large, long-throw installs. For an IP65 gobo light projector in the 30–200 W band, LED is the default and the comparison is about driver quality and thermal design, not the source.

  • Instant strike and tolerance of frequent switching
  • Output stability over the duty cycle
  • Driver quality and thermal design
  • Measured output at the wall, not rated lumens

Image quality and artwork freedom

Detail is the constraint that decides most comparisons. an IP65 gobo light projector carrying a custom gobo will reproduce a script monogram cleanly; alternatives that generate the image electronically or mechanically cannot. Check the thinnest stroke in your artwork against what each system holds before you weigh anything else.

  1. Can it render text and fine strokes
  2. Does it hold gradients or photographic halftones
  3. Gobo or pattern changeover time
  4. Maximum artwork resolution the optics can resolve

Running cost, heat and service life

Count the recurring costs: artwork re-cuts, filter replacement, cleaning access, and power. an IP65 gobo light projector that needs a cherry picker to service costs more over three years than a slightly more expensive unit that can be reached with a ladder. Access is a running cost and it is almost never in the quote.

  1. Rated hours and what end of life means
  2. Cleaning frequency and access method
  3. Gobo or pattern replacement cost and lead time
  4. Power draw at the actual duty cycle

Side by side

Ranked by what buyers actually complain about afterwards, the differences come down to artwork capability, servicing access and stability over time. Both options will produce light on a wall; only one will still be producing the right image on the right surface in two years.

How to choose

If you are still unsure, buy one of each and put them on the wall for a week. Differences that look marginal in a table are unmistakable on site, and one IP65 gobo light projector is a small price to pay for getting a rollout right.

  • Does the job need text, a logo or fine detail
  • Is the surface and ambient light controlled
  • How often will the artwork change
  • How will it be serviced in year three

Common questions

Can the image be changed later?

That is the advantage over permanent signage — the message changes without touching the building. Keep the artwork file and the gobo reference and a changeover is a formality rather than a project.

What surface works best?

A matte, light-coloured, flat surface square to the beam. Textured or glossy walls scatter the image and patterned ones compete with it. Where the surface cannot be changed, a smaller image is the effective fix.

Do I need a professional to install it?

Indoors on an existing supply, no. Outdoors, at height, or where new cabling is needed, yes: the risk on those jobs is the supply and the access rather than the projector itself.
