Where the effect lands and where it does not
The applications that work share one property: the surface is controlled. Where an indoor outdoor gobo projector succeeds — a covered entrance, a patio — somebody has thought about what is already falling on that wall. Where it fails, the unit is fighting daylight or a glossy, patterned surface it was never going to win against.
covered entrance: the straightforward install
covered entrance is the easy case for an indoor outdoor gobo projector and the one to learn on. The surface is usually matte and light-coloured, the ambient light is known, and the viewing distance is short enough that 30 W is plenty. Get the throw right, keep the beam square to the wall, and there is very little to go wrong.
Application two — patio
In a patio the competition is ambient light, and brute force is the expensive answer. Before moving from 30 W to 200 W, try relocation: a darker corner of the same wall, a surface angled away from the main fittings, or a slightly smaller image. Halving the image area doubles the brightness for free.
arcade walkway: the demanding case
The arcade walkway install is where the survey earns its money. Throw distances at the top of the 4–30 m range, uncontrolled ambient light, and access that may need a cherry picker all need settling before the indoor outdoor gobo projector is specified. Most disappointing results trace back to one of these being assumed rather than measured.
Recommended configuration by application
Match the configuration to the surface: matte and light-coloured surfaces give the most back, glossy or dark ones eat the image. On difficult surfaces, reduce the image size before increasing the power — it is cheaper and it works.

Three site questions
