How to Project a Logo on a Building

How-to 1 min read

Projecting a brand onto brick or concrete looks impressive, but the building fights back: texture, distance, and light all work against you.

Measure the Throw Distance

Throw distance — the gap from projector to wall — sets your lens. Too close and the logo is tiny; too far and it dims. Measure before buying; long-throw lenses exist for exactly this.

Estimate Required Lumens

A lit city facade needs far more than a dark one. As a rule, add lumens for every streetlight and lit window between you and the wall.

Facade conditionSuggested lumens
Dark, unlit wall5,000–10,000
Mixed street lighting10,000–20,000
Bright lit facade20,000+

Deal With Texture

Brick and stone chew up fine detail. Use a bolder logo, increase size, and accept softer edges; a hairline wordmark will not survive a rough surface.

Mounting and Aim

Fix the unit on a stable bracket well off the ground; vibration and wind blur the image. Aim perpendicular to the wall to avoid keystone distortion.

Permissions and Safety

Many cities require permission to project on public or shared facades, especially with lasers. Check with the building owner and local rules before install.

Test at the Real Hour

Always test at the actual time you will use it. A logo that pops at 9 pm may vanish at 7 pm against a still-lit sky.

Common questions

How bright for a building facade?

Dark walls need 5,000–10,000 lm; lit facades need 10,000–20,000+ lm depending on street lighting.

Will my thin logo show on brick?

Probably not sharply. Use a bolder mark, enlarge it, and expect softer edges on rough texture.

Do I need permission to project on a building?

Often yes — check with the owner and local rules, especially for public or laser projection.

What lens for a far wall?

A long-throw lens; measure the distance first so the logo lands at the size you want.

Why test at the real time of night?

Ambient light changes the result; a logo visible at 9 pm may wash out at 7 pm against a lit sky.

How do I stop the image blurring?

Mount on a stable, vibration-free bracket aimed perpendicular to the wall.
