Wedding Reception Gobo Light Installation: Position, Focus and Handover

Installation 2 min read

Installation is where a good wedding reception gobo light becomes a good result, or does not. Everything below is ordered the way the job should actually be done.

What to check on the first visit

The three survey failures are power, surface and access. No socket within reach, a target surface that is glossy or patterned, and a mounting point that needs scaffolding to reach — any of these turns an one-hour wedding reception gobo light install into a two-visit job. All three are visible in ten minutes on site.

  1. Nearest power and whether it is switched
  2. Surface material, colour and ambient light at the working hour
  3. Fixing substrate and bracket load
  4. How the unit will be reached for cleaning

Mounting height and bracket choice

Choose the bracket before the fixture. A wedding reception gobo light needs to hold its aim through thermal cycles and, outdoors, through wind loading; a lightweight bracket that drifts a degree will put the image off-target within a month. Use a bracket rated above the fixture weight, and if the install is exposed, check the fixings are stainless.

  • Bracket rated above the fixture weight
  • Stainless fixings for exposed positions
  • Beam as close to perpendicular as the site allows
  • Position reachable without powered access

The order of adjustments

Focus on the centre, then check the edges. A wedding reception gobo light focused on a flat wall should read evenly corner to corner; if it does not, the usual cause is an angled mount rather than a bad lens. Once you are happy, lock the focus if the unit allows it, because vibration and thermal cycling will otherwise move it over a season.

Power, cable routing and switching

Power is where commercial installs fail inspection. A wedding reception gobo light drawing 20–80 W is not a problem in itself, but a cable run across a public area, a domestic extension lead, or an unswitched spur all are. Plan a fixed supply, use a gland rated to the environment, and route the cable so it is neither a trip hazard nor the first thing a cleaner unplugs.

  • Fixed, switched, protected supply
  • Cable gland rated for the environment, fitted with a drip loop
  • Run out of reach and out of the cleaning route
  • Connection point accessible without dismantling the unit

Test it the way it will be used

Commission in three checks: image sharpness at the corners, contrast against the surface at the working hour, and a full duty cycle run without thermal cut-out. That last one matters for IP20 units in enclosed spaces, where a wedding reception gobo light can pass every optical test and still trip after four hours in a hot ceiling void.

  1. Image sharpness at the centre and all four corners
  2. Contrast against the surface at the working hour
  3. Full duty cycle run without thermal cut-out
  4. Housing temperature after an hour at full output

What the site team needs on paper

Write down the settings. A wedding reception gobo light reinstalled after decoration, or a second unit ordered to match the first, is only reproducible if somebody recorded the throw, the lens setting and the gobo reference. Put it in the site folder and send a copy to whoever will order the replacement.

  1. Throw distance and image width as installed
  2. Gobo reference and artwork file name
  3. Zoom and focus settings
  4. Supplier contact for re-cutting artwork

Common questions

What size gobo do I need?

The gobo has to match the holder in your specific wedding reception gobo light, and the image area is smaller than the outer diameter — a 53 mm gobo may only expose 45 mm. Ask for both figures and draw the artwork to the image area, not the outside dimension.

Do I need a professional to install it?

Indoors on an existing supply, no. Outdoors, at height, or where new cabling is needed, yes: the risk on those jobs is the supply and the access rather than the projector itself.

Is a wedding reception gobo light suitable for outdoor use?

Only with the right rating. Look for IP20 on the housing and check that the cable gland is included in that rating, because the entry point is where water actually gets in. Exposure, salt air and access for servicing all matter as much as the number.
