Installing a Wedding Gobo Projector: A Site-Ready Walkthrough

A wedding gobo projector is easy to mount and easy to mount wrong. The faults that generate callouts are almost always settled in the first hour on site, before any tool comes out of the bag.

What to check on the first visit

A wedding gobo projector install is mostly survey work. Walk the site at the hour the projection will run, because the ambient light, the position of vehicles, and even the position of a display stand all change what works. Take a photo, measure the throw, and mark the cable route before ordering anything.

Mounting height and bracket choice

Choose the bracket before the fixture. A wedding gobo projector needs to hold its aim through thermal cycles and, outdoors, through wind loading; a lightweight bracket that drifts a degree will put the image off-target within a month. Use a bracket rated above the fixture weight, and if the install is exposed, check the fixings are stainless.

Aiming, zooming and focusing

Focus on the centre, then check the edges. A wedding gobo projector focused on a flat wall should read evenly corner to corner; if it does not, the usual cause is an angled mount rather than a bad lens. Once you are happy, lock the focus if the unit allows it, because vibration and thermal cycling will otherwise move it over a season.

The part that fails inspection, not the optics

Power is where commercial installs fail inspection. A wedding gobo projector drawing 20–80 W is not a problem in itself, but a cable run across a public area, a domestic extension lead, or an unswitched spur all are. Plan a fixed supply, use a gland rated to the environment, and route the cable so it is neither a trip hazard nor the first thing a cleaner unplugs.

Commissioning checks

Commission in three checks: image sharpness at the corners, contrast against the surface at the working hour, and a full duty cycle run without thermal cut-out. That last one matters for IP20 units in enclosed spaces, where a wedding gobo projector can pass every optical test and still trip after four hours in a hot ceiling void.

What the site team needs on paper

Write down the settings. A wedding gobo projector reinstalled after decoration, or a second unit ordered to match the first, is only reproducible if somebody recorded the throw, the lens setting and the gobo reference. Put it in the site folder and send a copy to whoever will order the replacement.

Common questions

How long does the light source last?

The rating is usually 30,000–50,000 hours to L70. Whether you get it depends on heat: a well-ventilated wedding gobo projector will, one sealed into a ceiling void will not. Check the housing temperature after an hour at full output.

Is a wedding gobo projector suitable for outdoor use?

Only with the right rating. Look for IP20 on the housing and check that the cable gland is included in that rating, because the entry point is where water actually gets in. Exposure, salt air and access for servicing all matter as much as the number.

How often does it need cleaning?

Once or twice a year indoors, more often in a kitchen, workshop or roadside position. Set the interval from the environment and put it in the site calendar, because gradual output loss is easy to miss.
