Custom Glass Gobo Projector Installation: Position, Focus and Handover

Installation 2 min read

A custom glass gobo projector is easy to mount and easy to mount wrong. The faults that generate callouts are almost always settled in the first hour on site, before any tool comes out of the bag.

Survey before you drill

Installations go wrong in the first hour, on the survey, when somebody decides where the bracket goes before checking what is behind the wall. Before you drill for a custom glass gobo projector, confirm four things: the power position, what the surface is made of, whether the mounting point can carry the weight, and where the image will actually land once the furniture and signage are in place.

  • Power within reach of the mounting point
  • What the target surface is made of and how it is lit
  • Whether the mounting point carries the weight
  • Access for future servicing — ladder or powered platform

Mounting height and bracket choice

Choose the bracket before the fixture. A custom glass gobo projector needs to hold its aim through thermal cycles and, outdoors, through wind loading; a lightweight bracket that drifts a degree will put the image off-target within a month. Use a bracket rated above the fixture weight, and if the install is exposed, check the fixings are stainless.

  1. Bracket rated above the fixture weight
  2. Stainless fixings for exposed positions
  3. Beam as close to perpendicular as the site allows
  4. Position reachable without powered access

The order of adjustments

Do the final focus at the hour the unit will actually run, with the surface at its normal temperature. A custom glass gobo projector focused on a cold wall at 9am can drift slightly as the housing warms, and on long throws that drift is the difference between crisp and acceptable.

The part that fails inspection, not the optics

Fit the cable gland the right way up and leave a drip loop. Those two details prevent most of the water ingress calls on outdoor custom glass gobo projector installs. Then confirm the supply is switched and labelled, so the site team can isolate the unit without hunting through a distribution board.

Test it the way it will be used

Test the way it will be used, not the way it was installed. Run the custom glass gobo projector at the hour it is meant to run, with the house lights at their normal setting, and look at the image from where the audience will stand. A unit that looks fine at 2pm in an empty room can be invisible at 7pm with the lights on.

  • Image sharpness at the centre and all four corners
  • Contrast against the surface at the working hour
  • Full duty cycle run without thermal cut-out
  • Housing temperature after an hour at full output

Handover notes worth leaving behind

Write down the settings. A custom glass gobo projector reinstalled after decoration, or a second unit ordered to match the first, is only reproducible if somebody recorded the throw, the lens setting and the gobo reference. Put it in the site folder and send a copy to whoever will order the replacement.

Common questions

What size gobo do I need?

The gobo has to match the holder in your specific custom glass gobo projector, and the image area is smaller than the outer diameter — a 53 mm gobo may only expose 45 mm. Ask for both figures and draw the artwork to the image area, not the outside dimension.

How often does it need cleaning?

Once or twice a year indoors, more often in a kitchen, workshop or roadside position. Set the interval from the environment and put it in the site calendar, because gradual output loss is easy to miss.

What surface works best?

A matte, light-coloured, flat surface square to the beam. Textured or glossy walls scatter the image and patterned ones compete with it. Where the surface cannot be changed, a smaller image is the effective fix.
