A Practical Buying Guide to the Zoom Focus Gobo Projector

Buying guides 2 min read

Most zoom focus gobo projector purchases are decided on a wattage figure and regretted on a wall. The specification that actually governs the result is the one nobody writes down: the distance between the bracket and the surface.

Start with the throw distance

Ask where the fixture will physically sit before asking what it should cost. On a zoom focus gobo projector the throw distance sets the lens, the lens sets the image size, and only then does wattage become a meaningful question. Buyers who start with the power figure usually end up with a unit that is either wasted on a short throw or hopeless on a long one.

  • Throw distance from the mounting point the site will allow
  • Required image width at that distance
  • Surface material and colour
  • Whether the beam can be square to the surface

Match output to the ambient light

Output is not a property of the lamp, it is a relationship between the lamp and the room. An indoor corridor sitting at 300 lux will swallow a 30 W image completely, while the same unit reads clearly in a 50 lux courtyard at dusk. Before you size a zoom focus gobo projector, find out how bright the target surface already is at the hour it will be used — that single measurement decides whether you need 30 W or 200 W.

Lens, zoom and focus

Ask two questions about the lens: what is the throw ratio range, and can focus be locked. A zoom focus gobo projector with a 3:1 zoom will cover 3 to 30 m from the same bracket, but only if the focus mechanism holds its setting once the housing is warm and the site has been vibrating for a month.

What your artwork forces you to buy

Your artwork decides the gobo material, not the other way round. A glass gobo handles fine strokes, gradients and photographic halftones that a metal stencil simply cannot hold, but it costs more and needs a little more care in handling. If the design is a solid single-colour mark with no fine detail, metal is cheaper and effectively unbreakable; if it has thin script or a gradient, glass is the only honest answer.

Ingress rating and mounting environment

Match the rating to the site honestly. A zoom focus gobo projector mounted under a canopy needs far less protection than one on an open facade, and the price difference across ratings is real. What catches people out is the cable entry — a housing can be rated IP65 while the gland supplied with it is not, and that is where water actually gets in.

  1. Is the position exposed to driving rain or only wind-blown moisture
  2. Whether the cable gland is rated with the housing
  3. UV exposure on painted finishes and plastic parts
  4. Salt or pollutant load in the air

What to send when you ask for a quote

The fastest quotes come from the most specific enquiries. Include the mounting height, the distance to the target surface, whether it is indoor or exposed, and the artwork in vector if you have it. A zoom focus gobo projector specification built from those details can be quoted and shipped without a second round of clarification.

  • Mounting point and distance to the surface
  • Image size needed
  • Indoor or exposed position
  • Working hours and ambient conditions
  • Artwork in vector format

Common questions

What surface works best?

Matte and light-coloured, square to the beam. Glossy surfaces reflect the light away from the viewer and dark ones absorb it; both cost you contrast that no amount of extra wattage recovers cheaply. If the surface is fixed, reduce the image size instead.

How often does it need cleaning?

Twice a year in a clean interior, quarterly anywhere with dust, grease or road exposure. Cleaning is the cheapest maintenance there is and the most often deferred — and deferred cleaning is what makes a zoom focus gobo projector look like it has failed.

Can I project my own logo?

Any mark can be cut, but not every mark survives being cut. Vector files, reasonable stroke weights and a proof at the intended projection size will avoid the usual disappointment. Keep the original file — every reorder starts from it.
