What to Look for When Buying a Storefront Gobo Projector

There is a point in every storefront gobo projector enquiry where the buyer realises the decision was made backwards. Output was chosen before distance, and the lens was chosen last. This piece puts them in order.

Measure the throw before you read any spec

Ask where the fixture will physically sit before asking what it should cost. On a storefront gobo projector the throw distance sets the lens, the lens sets the image size, and only then does wattage become a meaningful question. Buyers who start with the power figure usually end up with a unit that is either wasted on a short throw or hopeless on a long one.

  1. Distance from the realistic mounting point to the centre of the target surface
  2. Image width you actually need, measured on the wall
  3. Whether the surface is flat, matte and square to the beam
  4. Any obstacle in the beam path — signage, foliage, display stands

Match output to the ambient light

Match the output to the darkest hour you care about, not the brightest. If the storefront gobo projector only has to work after sunset, 30 W may be generous; if it has to hold up against a shop window at 4pm, you are looking at the top of the 30–150 W range and still managing expectations. Overbuying power to solve an ambient light problem is the most expensive way to fix it.

Lens, zoom and focus

Ask two questions about the lens: what is the throw ratio range, and can focus be locked. A storefront gobo projector with a 3:1 zoom will cover 3 to 15 m from the same bracket, but only if the focus mechanism holds its setting once the housing is warm and the site has been vibrating for a month.

Gobo material: glass or metal

One practical test: look at the thinnest stroke in the design at the size it will be projected. If it is under a couple of millimetres at the wall, a cut metal stencil will not hold it and a glass gobo is required. That single check prevents the most common storefront gobo projector disappointment — a logo that looks perfect in the proof and falls apart in light.

Where it lives matters as much as what it does

The ingress rating is a statement about where the unit can live, not how good it is. IP65 on a storefront gobo projector means it will cope with the conditions it was tested for — driving rain, dust, or in the case of indoor ratings, nothing more than a wipe-down. If the install is under a soffit that only sees wind-blown rain, an indoor-rated unit may be fine; if it is exposed on an entrance threshold, IP65 is the floor, not the target.

  • Is the position exposed to driving rain or only wind-blown moisture
  • Whether the cable gland is rated with the housing
  • UV exposure on painted finishes and plastic parts
  • Salt or pollutant load in the air

The five lines that get an accurate quote

The fastest quotes come from the most specific enquiries. Include the mounting height, the distance to the target surface, whether it is indoor or exposed, and the artwork in vector if you have it. A storefront gobo projector specification built from those details can be quoted and shipped without a second round of clarification.

Common questions

How long does the light source last?

LED sources in this class are rated in the tens of thousands of hours to L70, but that assumes reasonable cooling. A storefront gobo projector running hot in an enclosed void will not reach the figure. Thermal design and cleaning access determine the real number more than the datasheet does.

How far can a storefront gobo projector throw?

Expect usable work between 3 and 15 m. What matters is the image width at that distance: the same unit can give a 1 m or a 3 m image depending on the lens, and the smaller one is always the brighter.

Can I project my own logo?

Any mark can be cut, but not every mark survives being cut. Vector files, reasonable stroke weights and a proof at the intended projection size will avoid the usual disappointment. Keep the original file — every reorder starts from it.
