Most remote control gobo projector purchases are decided on a wattage figure and regretted on a wall. The specification that actually governs the result is the one nobody writes down: the distance between the bracket and the surface.

Measure the throw before you read any spec

The first number to fix is the throw. A remote control gobo projector rated for 4–25 m covers a very different wall at the near end than at the far end, and the image width roughly triples across that range on a typical zoom lens. Measure from the realistic mounting point — the one the site will actually let you use — and write it down before you look at any product page.

  • Distance from the realistic mounting point to the centre of the target surface
  • Image width you actually need, measured on the wall
  • Whether the surface is flat, matte and square to the beam
  • Any obstacle in the beam path — signage, foliage, display stands

Brightness is a question about the room, not the lamp

Output is not a property of the lamp, it is a relationship between the lamp and the room. An indoor corridor sitting at 300 lux will swallow a 30 W image completely, while the same unit reads clearly in a 50 lux courtyard at dusk. Before you size a remote control gobo projector, find out how bright the target surface already is at the hour it will be used — that single measurement decides whether you need 20 W or 150 W.

The optics decide what you can actually adjust

What your artwork forces you to buy

Your artwork decides the gobo material, not the other way round. A glass gobo handles fine strokes, gradients and photographic halftones that a metal stencil simply cannot hold, but it costs more and needs a little more care in handling. If the design is a solid single-colour mark with no fine detail, metal is cheaper and effectively unbreakable; if it has thin script or a gradient, glass is the only honest answer.

Where it lives matters as much as what it does

Match the rating to the site honestly. A remote control gobo projector mounted under a canopy needs far less protection than one on an open facade, and the price difference across ratings is real. What catches people out is the cable entry — a housing can be rated IP65 while the gland supplied with it is not, and that is where water actually gets in.

  3. UV exposure on painted finishes and plastic parts
  4. Salt or pollutant load in the air

A matte, light-coloured, flat surface square to the beam. Textured or glossy walls scatter the image and patterned ones compete with it. Where the surface cannot be changed, a smaller image is the effective fix.

Is a remote control gobo projector suitable for outdoor use?

Only with the right rating. Look for IP65 on the housing and check that the cable gland is included in that rating, because the entry point is where water actually gets in. Exposure, salt air and access for servicing all matter as much as the number.
