Most outdoor gobo projector purchases are decided on a wattage figure and regretted on a wall. The specification that actually governs the result is the one nobody writes down: the distance between the bracket and the surface.

Measure the throw before you read any spec

The first number to fix is the throw. an outdoor gobo projector rated for 8โ€“40 m covers a very different wall at the near end than at the far end, and the image width roughly triples across that range on a typical zoom lens. Measure from the realistic mounting point โ€” the one the site will actually let you use โ€” and write it down before you look at any product page.

  • Throw distance from the mounting point the site will allow
  • Required image width at that distance
  • Surface material and colour
  • Whether the beam can be square to the surface

Match output to the ambient light

Output is not a property of the lamp, it is a relationship between the lamp and the room. An indoor corridor sitting at 300 lux will swallow a 30 W image completely, while the same unit reads clearly in a 50 lux courtyard at dusk. Before you size an outdoor gobo projector, find out how bright the target surface already is at the hour it will be used โ€” that single measurement decides whether you need 50 W or 300 W.

Lens, zoom and focus

The optics decide what you can correct later. A fixed lens outdoor gobo projector has to be positioned correctly the first time; a zoom lens lets you frame the image after the bracket is up. In practice that difference is worth more than an extra 20 W, because the most common install problem is not brightness โ€” it is an image that lands slightly off the intended surface with no way to adjust it.

Gobo material: glass or metal

Choose the gobo from the artwork file. Solid block logos survive etching into stainless steel and will outlast the projector, but anything with hairlines, grey levels or a photographic element has to go on glass. This is the decision that most often gets made backwards โ€” the buyer orders a cheap metal gobo, sees the result on the wall, and reorders in glass two weeks later.

Where it lives matters as much as what it does

The ingress rating is a statement about where the unit can live, not how good it is. IP65 on an outdoor gobo projector means it will cope with the conditions it was tested for โ€” driving rain, dust, or in the case of indoor ratings, nothing more than a wipe-down. If the install is under a soffit that only sees wind-blown rain, an indoor-rated unit may be fine; if it is exposed on a garden wall, IP65 is the floor, not the target.

  • Is the position exposed to driving rain or only wind-blown moisture
  • Whether the cable gland is rated with the housing
  • UV exposure on painted finishes and plastic parts
  • Salt or pollutant load in the air

Realistically 8 to 40 m for this class, with the image widening as the distance grows. The limiting factor is rarely reach โ€” it is contrast, which fails well before the beam does. Ask for image width at your throw rather than a maximum distance.

How much power does an outdoor gobo projector need?

It depends on the ambient light rather than the distance alone. For a controlled indoor surface the lower end of the 50โ€“300 W range is usually enough; against a lit shop window or a facade at dusk you want the upper end. Measure the light already falling on the surface before ordering, because that number decides it.

Can I project my own logo?

Any mark can be cut, but not every mark survives being cut. Vector files, reasonable stroke weights and a proof at the intended projection size will avoid the usual disappointment. Keep the original file โ€” every reorder starts from it.
