What to Look for When Buying a Long Throw Gobo Projector

Most long throw gobo projector purchases are decided on a wattage figure and regretted on a wall. The specification that actually governs the result is the one nobody writes down: the distance between the bracket and the surface.

Start with the throw distance

The first number to fix is the throw. A long throw gobo projector rated for 20–80 m covers a very different wall at the near end than at the far end, and the image width roughly triples across that range on a typical zoom lens. Measure from the realistic mounting point — the one the site will actually let you use — and write it down before you look at any product page.

Brightness is a question about the room, not the lamp

Match the output to the darkest hour you care about, not the brightest. If the long throw gobo projector only has to work after sunset, 100 W may be generous; if it has to hold up against a shop window at 4pm, you are looking at the top of the 100–400 W range and still managing expectations. Overbuying power to solve an ambient light problem is the most expensive way to fix it.

  • Surface reflectance — matte white gives the most back
  • Image width, since halving the area doubles the brightness
  • Whether the unit has to compete with daylight

Lens, zoom and focus

Ask two questions about the lens: what is the throw ratio range, and can focus be locked. A long throw gobo projector with a 3:1 zoom will cover 20 to 80 m from the same bracket, but only if the focus mechanism holds its setting once the housing is warm and the site has been vibrating for a month.

What your artwork forces you to buy

One practical test: look at the thinnest stroke in the design at the size it will be projected. If it is under a couple of millimetres at the wall, a cut metal stencil will not hold it and a glass gobo is required. That single check prevents the most common long throw gobo projector disappointment — a logo that looks perfect in the proof and falls apart in light.

Where it lives matters as much as what it does

The ingress rating is a statement about where the unit can live, not how good it is. IP67 on a long throw gobo projector means it will cope with the conditions it was tested for — driving rain, dust, or in the case of indoor ratings, nothing more than a wipe-down. If the install is under a soffit that only sees wind-blown rain, an indoor-rated unit may be fine; if it is exposed on a tower base, IP67 is the floor, not the target.

  2. Whether the cable gland is rated with the housing
  3. UV exposure on painted finishes and plastic parts
  4. Salt or pollutant load in the air

Common questions

How much power does a long throw gobo projector need?

Start from the ambient light. A dim interior needs very little; a stadium elevation at the working hour may need the top of the 100–400 W range. Increasing image size costs more output than most buyers expect, so fix the size first, then the power.

What surface works best?

Matte and light-coloured, square to the beam. Glossy surfaces reflect the light away from the viewer and dark ones absorb it; both cost you contrast that no amount of extra wattage recovers cheaply. If the surface is fixed, reduce the image size instead.

How long does the light source last?

The rating is usually 30,000–50,000 hours to L70. Whether you get it depends on heat: a well-ventilated long throw gobo projector will, one sealed into a ceiling void will not. Check the housing temperature after an hour at full output.
