A Practical Buying Guide to the IP65 Gobo Light Projector

Most IP65 gobo light projector purchases are decided on a wattage figure and regretted on a wall. The specification that actually governs the result is the one nobody writes down: the distance between the bracket and the surface.

Measure the throw before you read any spec

The first number to fix is the throw. an IP65 gobo light projector rated for 5–30 m covers a very different wall at the near end than at the far end, and the image width roughly triples across that range on a typical zoom lens. Measure from the realistic mounting point — the one the site will actually let you use — and write it down before you look at any product page.

Brightness is a question about the room, not the lamp

Output is not a property of the lamp, it is a relationship between the lamp and the room. An indoor corridor sitting at 300 lux will swallow a 30 W image completely, while the same unit reads clearly in a 50 lux courtyard at dusk. Before you size an IP65 gobo light projector, find out how bright the target surface already is at the hour it will be used — that single measurement decides whether you need 30 W or 200 W.

The optics decide what you can actually adjust

In practice that difference is worth more than an extra 20 W, because the most common install problem is not brightness — it is an image that lands slightly off the intended surface with no way to adjust it.

Gobo material: glass or metal

One practical test: look at the thinnest stroke in the design at the size it will be projected. If it is under a couple of millimetres at the wall, a cut metal stencil will not hold it and a glass gobo is required. That single check prevents the most common IP65 gobo light projector disappointment — a logo that looks perfect in the proof and falls apart in light.

Ingress rating and mounting environment

Two things wear out before the electronics do: the gasket and the cable gland. Specify IP65 for an IP65 gobo light projector going outdoors, but also ask about the finish on the bracket and whether the gland is included in the rating. Salt air near a perimeter wall will find the cheapest component in the assembly within two seasons.

Do I need a professional to install it?

Indoors on an existing supply, no. Outdoors, at height, or where new cabling is needed, yes: the risk on those jobs is the supply and the access rather than the projector itself.

Can I project my own logo?

Yes — that is the point of an IP65 gobo light projector. Supply vector artwork if you have it, and check the thinnest stroke in the design, because that is what determines whether a glass gobo is required. Most artwork problems show up as lost detail rather than a failed unit.

How long does the light source last?

LED sources in this class are rated in the tens of thousands of hours to L70, but that assumes reasonable cooling. an IP65 gobo light projector running hot in an enclosed void will not reach the figure. Thermal design and cleaning access determine the real number more than the datasheet does.
