What to Look for When Buying an Indoor Outdoor Gobo Projector

Most indoor outdoor gobo projector purchases are decided on a wattage figure and regretted on a wall. The specification that actually governs the result is the one nobody writes down: the distance between the bracket and the surface.

Measure the throw before you read any spec

Every indoor outdoor gobo projector decision starts from one measurement that most buyers skip: the distance between where the unit can be mounted and the surface it has to cover. Once you have that figure, the power bracket narrows from everything on the market to a handful of models, and the lens choice follows from it. Work it out with a tape, not from a floor plan, because ceiling voids, signage and light fittings move the real mounting point by a metre or more.

Brightness is a question about the room, not the lamp

Match the output to the darkest hour you care about, not the brightest. This is the decision that most often gets made backwards — the buyer orders a cheap metal gobo, sees the result on the wall, and reorders in glass two weeks later.

Where it lives matters as much as what it does

What catches people out is the cable entry — a housing can be rated IP65 while the gland supplied with it is not, and that is where water actually gets in.

Common questions

What size gobo do I need?

The gobo has to match the holder in your specific indoor outdoor gobo projector, and the image area is smaller than the outer diameter — a 53 mm gobo may only expose 45 mm. Ask for both figures and draw the artwork to the image area, not the outside dimension.

Do I need a professional to install it?

Indoors on an existing supply, no. Outdoors, at height, or where new cabling is needed, yes: the risk on those jobs is the supply and the access rather than the projector itself.

How much power does an indoor outdoor gobo projector need?

It depends on the ambient light rather than the distance alone. For a controlled indoor surface the lower end of the 30–200 W range is usually enough; against a lit shop window or a facade at dusk you want the upper end. Measure the light already falling on the surface before ordering, because that number decides it.
