Start with the throw distance
Every gobo light projector decision starts from one measurement that most buyers skip: the distance between where the unit can be mounted and the surface it has to cover. Once you have that figure, the power bracket narrows from everything on the market to a handful of models, and the lens choice follows from it. Work it out with a tape, not from a floor plan, because ceiling voids, signage and light fittings move the real mounting point by a metre or more.
- Distance from the realistic mounting point to the centre of the target surface
- Image width you actually need, measured on the wall
- Whether the surface is flat, matte and square to the beam
- Any obstacle in the beam path — signage, foliage, display stands
Match output to the ambient light
Match the output to the darkest hour you care about, not the brightest. If the gobo light projector only has to work after sunset, 20 W may be generous; if it has to hold up against a shop window at 4pm, you are looking at the top of the 20–200 W range and still managing expectations. Overbuying power to solve an ambient light problem is the most expensive way to fix it.

The optics decide what you can actually adjust
The optics decide what you can correct later. A fixed lens gobo light projector has to be positioned correctly the first time; a zoom lens lets you frame the image after the bracket is up. In practice that difference is worth more than an extra 20 W, because the most common install problem is not brightness — it is an image that lands slightly off the intended surface with no way to adjust it.
What your artwork forces you to buy
One practical test: look at the thinnest stroke in the design at the size it will be projected. If it is under a couple of millimetres at the wall, a cut metal stencil will not hold it and a glass gobo is required. That single check prevents the most common gobo light projector disappointment — a logo that looks perfect in the proof and falls apart in light.
Ingress rating and mounting environment
The ingress rating is a statement about where the unit can live, not how good it is. IP44 on a gobo light projector means it will cope with the conditions it was tested for — driving rain, dust, or in the case of indoor ratings, nothing more than a wipe-down. If the install is under a soffit that only sees wind-blown rain, an indoor-rated unit may be fine; if it is exposed on a cocktail bar, IP44 is the floor, not the target.

- Whether the cable gland is rated with the housing
- UV exposure on painted finishes and plastic parts
- Salt or pollutant load in the air

The fastest quotes come from the most specific enquiries. Include the mounting height, the distance to the target surface, whether it is indoor or exposed, and the artwork in vector if you have it. A gobo light projector specification built from those details can be quoted and shipped without a second round of clarification.
