How Many Lumens for a Gobo Projector

Specs explained 1 min read

The brightness question is almost always asked as a single number and almost always answered wrong. Lumens describe the lamp, not the wall. What you see is set by three things the spec sheet lists separately: ambient light, throw distance and image size.

Lumens are not the wall

A higher lumen figure helps, but only against the light already on the surface. A 30W unit in a dim room can out-read a 100W unit aimed at a lit shop window. Start from the wall, not the lamp.

Ambient light sets the floor

Measure the light falling on the target surface at the hour you care about. A controlled interior needs little; a facade at dusk or a window in daylight needs the top of the range.

  • Dim interior: low end of range
  • Lit shop window: upper end
  • Daylight or streetlight: often needs the maximum

Distance and image size

Throw distance and image size move together. The same unit gives a small bright image up close or a large dim one far away. Fix the size you need first, then size the power.

Why bigger image costs more

Spreading the same light over a larger area lowers the brightness per square metre. Buyers routinely underestimate how much output a big image eats — then blame the unit.

A practical check

Ask the supplier for image width at your throw, not a maximum distance. The width is what you will actually see, and it is the honest number.

Summary

Pick the unit by the worst-case surface and the image size, then confirm the lumen figure covers it. A number quoted alone tells you almost nothing.

Common questions

How many lumens do I need for a window?

Often the high end of the range, because daylight and streetlight fight the image. Measure the light on the glass at open hours first.

Does more lumens always mean brighter?

On the same surface and size, yes. But a bigger image spreads the light thinner, so lumens alone mislead.

Why does my logo look dim far away?

Throw distance and image size. The beam widens and the brightness per area drops. Either move closer or use a long-throw lens and more power.

What is more important, lumens or lens?

For a fixed surface, the lens (throw ratio) matters as much as lumens. A wrong lens wastes output.

Can I just buy the brightest unit?

You can, but you may pay for output you cannot aim or cool. Match the number to the wall and the size.

How do I compare two projectors fairly?

Compare image width at the same throw and the same ambient condition. Headline lumens are not comparable across products.
